How a water ionizer makes Kangen Water
- Filter. Tap water passes through the machine’s filter first.
- Electrolysis. Inside, electrode plates carry a current through the water. In the K8 there are eight platinum-coated titanium plates.
- Separate. The water splits into an alkaline stream and an acidic stream.
- Choose. The setting you pick decides which stream comes out of the hose, and how strong it is.

Kangen Water vs regular filtered water
A regular filter only filters. A Kangen machine filters and then ionizes, so it can make several kinds of water from one tap: drinking water, plus water listed for cooking, beauty care and cleaning. The trade-off is price: an ionizer costs far more than a basic filter. Our water ionizer buyer’s guide compares ionizers, filters and reverse osmosis.
What the research says
Be careful with health claims you read online. Mayo Clinic’s view is that “for most people, alkaline water is not better than plain water”, and that claims about preventing disease need more research. It also notes safety concerns at very high pH for people with kidney disease.
